		<description>Recipes for a Warmer World

Recipes for a Warmer World: Cooking up Plants of the Futurescape as Colors, Scents, and Foods invites multi-sensory appreciation for plants that will likely thrive in a future landscape. It includes tested recipes for extracting color from seven plant species, along with secondary recipes for either scent or taste. Four essays frame this DIY making initiative—an essay on ethnobotany, one on the chemistry of color, another on the colonization of pokeweed, and a speculative hike along the Appalachian Trail.

	Recipes for a Warmer World: Cooking up Plants of the Futurescape as Colors, Scents, and Foods&#38;nbsp;invites multi-sensory appreciation for plants that will likely thrive in a future landscape, using the Climate Change Tree Atlas, among&#38;nbsp;other research. It includes tested recipes&#38;nbsp;for extracting color from seven plant&#38;nbsp;species, along with secondary recipes for&#38;nbsp;either scent or taste.&#38;nbsp;Each plant is accompanied by photos and a description such as the common and scientific names, family, habitat, and ecological significance.
As a cross-disciplinary project, Recipes for a Warmer World offers four essays to frame the DIY making and instructional initiative of the book. These are—an essay on ethnobotany, one on the chemistry of color, another on the colonization of pokeweed, and a speculative hike along the Appalachian Trail. Essays are written by Pratt faculty—artist/designer Jean Brennan, chemist Cindie Kehlet, environmental scientist, Audrey L.M. Lindsey—and herbalist, Sarah Elisabeth (Director of A Farm for All!). The book was designed by Pratt GradComD alum, Janneane Blevins, and Jean Brennan, and printed by Lucky Risograph and Conveyor Studio. The project was supported with a grant from the STEAMplant Initiative.&#38;nbsp;
Futurescape exhibition and book launch at the Juliana Curran Terian Design Center, Pratt Institute, April 2025, included both the book as well as artifacts made during the research.

	In the U.S. and Europe, Japanese Knotweed is one of the most hated non-native plants for the damage it can cause to an ecosystem, and yet there is no away—eradication is impossible. This project—through video, writing, image-making, and ethnobotanical uses like natural dyeing—seeks to complicate our understanding of the plant and the terminology (invasive, non-native) that “others” not only the species, but also the cultures and places from which it comes. The collage and prose shown here accompany a 5-minute video, titled The Wild Garden. Both were created during a residency at Subcircle in Biddeford, Maine.

	The project began with an excavation of family history related to site and resulted in an ecological and social field guide to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, along with a durational action and accompanying set of tools. The walk traced the perimeter of an aerial bomb military training site, located in an ecologically rare dwarf pine plain during the season’s first snow. The field guide includes an essay, project documentation, and images that register how areas of the Pinelands have been deemed ’sacrificial zones’ (Naomi Klein) despite their ecological significance.

	This risograph-printed broadsheet integrates ecologist Richard Karban’s research on airborne communication in sagebrush plants* with Marianne von Willemer’s love poem to Goethe that addresses the wind.
It also served as a score for a live performance at Sagehen Creek Field Station in Tahoe National Forest. Audience members, along with incognito performers, were guided along a path, and onto a foot bridge where they discovered stacks of the broadsheets. Silk scrims dyed with sagebrush, wolf lichen and lodgepole pine bark, harvested on site, set the stage for a reading, in the round, of the poem Suleika I.&#38;nbsp;

*Inspired by ecologist Richard Karban’s research on airborne communication in sagebrush plants, leading to resiliency in the species: Damage-Induced Resistance in Sagebrush: Volatiles are Key To Intra- and Interplant Communication by Richard Karban, Kaori Shiojiri, Mikaela Huntzinger, and Andrew C. McCall
